Amy, Shannon & Don, as well as Don’s wife Denise and grandson Matthew, will be participating in this years Relay For Life on June 24th from 6-10pm at the Champlain Valley Exposition.
What is Relay For Life?
The Relay For Life movement is dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, our communities are teaming up - virtually or in person - to make a difference. When we rally together in the fight against cancer, we can accomplish anything.
Why are we participating?
Shannon – My Mother is a 14 year cancer survivor. Not long after she was diagnosed we participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I then became a committee member for Strides, which then led to being a committee member for Bark For Life, Cattle Barons Ball and Relay For Life! I found great joy in not just fundraising but being part of the amazing committee that creates these events. I took a few years off and am now back on the committee for Relay for Life as part of the Luminaria team.
Amy – I became involved in Relay For Life 19 years ago after my diagnosis of Breast Cancer. I was 32. In an effort to think about something other than myself, and when was my next treatment, I contacted the American Cancer Society to ask if there was something I could do to help. They said they needed a food committee chair. I thought, how hard can that be? It was a bit more difficult than I had planned, but the reward was so magnificent. I held many fundraisers that first year and we become the second top team in 2004! It was so gratifying to make a difference in this way. The leadership team asked me to Chair the event in 2005. I couldn’t wait to share the news with my husband. He shared concern when I told him that perhaps I was taking on too much, too soon. I told him it was more than that, the American Cancer Society asked ME to chair this event next year, they think I will be alive to do this! They were right! Relay for Life gave me HOPE! That is what it is all about. Walking side by side with family, friends, and complete strangers to show, nobody walks their cancer journey alone. I am proud to be part of The Marcelino Team each and every day, and so proud of the stand they have taken against cancer!
